In October the Labor Studies Center will be offering:

Wayne State UniversityParliamentary Procedure on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. held on Wayne State University main campus. This workshop teaches effective use of parliamentary procedure helps leaders ensure orderly debate & decision-making, the opportunity for all to voice their opinions, run productive meetings and strong membership participation. If solidarity and democracy are core union values, Parliamentary Procedure is an essential road map.

Evaluating a Case for Arbitration on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on WSU main campus. This workshop is designed to provide senior officers and executive boards with the evaluative tools necessary to decide whether or not to advance a grievance. Analyze disciplinary causes, standards of interpreting contract language and burden of proof.

Basic Grievance Handling on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on WSU main campus. This class is a MUST for union representative, and it’s a great education for those who would like to understand more about how grievances are processed. Learn to identify legitimate contract grievances, understand how to the use the principle of “Just Cause” in disciplinary cases and practice the “Dos and Don’ts” of effective grievance handling.

Family Medical Leave Act on Tuesday Oct. 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. or Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at WSU Main Campus. This workshop introduces union members and activists to the coverage and applications of this important federal law. Learn who is covered, how to activate protections and under what conditions people can receive benefits.

Collective Bargaining on Saturday’s Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on WSU main campus. This two-session class provides practical skills and knowledge necessary for collective bargaining. Whether you are a union negotiator or simply want a better understanding of this important process. YOU MUST ATTEND BOTH SESSIONS.
