Completed Applications Must Be Received by Feb. 15, 2022

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Treasury reminds communities that the deadline to apply for funding from the First Responder Training and Recruitment Grant Program is rapidly approaching.

All Michigan cities, villages, townships, counties, or fire authorities are eligible to apply for a grant of up to $200,000 related to first responder recruitment and training. Completed applications must be received by the state Treasury Department on or before Feb. 15, 2022.

“This grant program provides governmental units funding to prioritize the recruitment and training of first responders,” said Deputy State Treasurer Heather Frick, who oversees the state Treasury Department’s State and Local Finance programs. “Local units are encouraged to not wait to apply. These dollars will help our communities provide better services to keep Michigan residents safe. Our staff has been working to make sure our local government partners are aware of this program.”

Awards to any one applicant shall be no more than $100,000 for recruitment and no more than $100,000 for training programs. A total of $5 million is available for the grant program.

Governmental units can submit their application through an online portal at Michigan.gov/FRG.

First responders are police officers, firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), paramedics, and the local unit of government corrections officers.

Applications will be selected for funding by the state Treasury Department based on program purpose, eligibility, and criteria. Projects are funded on a reimbursement basis.

To help eligible local governments navigate the First Responder Training and Recruitment Grant Program, the state Treasury Department has developed a frequently asked questions document to ensure eligible recipients have a complete and competitive application.
