West Bloomfield Police Officer Patrick O’Rourke was killed in the line of duty last night in West Bloomfield Township. As of this morning, his shooter was still barricaded in a home.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the 12-year police veteran and Police Officers Association of Michigan member “was shot as he entered the home on Forest Edge, off Pontiac Trail, at around 10 p.m. Sunday, West Bloomfield Township Police Lt. Timothy Diamond said today.” Officer O’Rourke was also a married father of four.
Diamond said that the gunman’s family called 911 and that Officer O’Rourke was one of five officers who responded to the initial call. It was when they entered the house that the shooting began, which neighbor Renne Poota, 33, said lasted from about 10 p.m. to 11:15 p.m.
“It was very scary,” she told the Free Press. “I just saw the police break into the house, and there was shooting. And I guess it was the police (officer) that just passed away, they were carrying him out and there was an ambulance.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer O’Rourke’s family and friends.
We’ll be updating this space as more information becomes available to us.
