The Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) proudly reinforces our endorsement of Donald Trump and JD Vance in the 2024 election. This endorsement reflects a commitment to policies prioritizing the safety, support, and well-being of ALL law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. As our members voiced, the pressing need for clear, enforceable policies to address current challenges facing law enforcement and public safety drove this decision.
POAM Members are not “Garbage”
Among the key policies that influenced our support are:
1. Border Security and Asylum Reform
We believe a secure border is fundamental to ensuring community safety. Proposals to limit entry to traditional ports and reinstate the “remain in Mexico” rule allow for orderly, lawful entry and ensure that cases are processed responsibly before individuals enter the U.S.
2. Qualified Immunity for Law Enforcement
Qualified immunity is essential for officers who serve and protect under challenging and often dangerous conditions. This policy provides necessary legal safeguards so officers can perform their duties with the confidence that they will be supported when making split-second decisions on behalf of the public.
3. No Tax on Overtime
Given the increasing demands on law enforcement, overtime work has become more routine. Removing the tax on overtime pay acknowledges the dedication and personal sacrifices officers make, providing them with financial relief for the extensive hours they commit to public service.
4. Death Penalty for the Murder of On-Duty Officers
We support this measure as an unequivocal deterrent to those who seek to harm officers while they serve. This proposed penalty underscores the value and respect we hold for those in uniform, especially in the context of violent acts committed by individuals residing unlawfully in the country.
5. Medicare for Eligible Retirees
Ensuring access to Medicare for officers eligible for retirement reflects our commitment to their health and welfare after decades of service. This support is a small but meaningful acknowledgment of their dedication.
