Update On Grand Blanc Church Shooting
Grand Blanc Township provided an update on Friday, October 3rd, on the deadly mass shooting and fire at a church that took place on Sunday, September 28th. The police chief and the township supervisor spoke at a brief press conference, where they also released bodycam footage of the incident.
The incident began at 10:25 a.m. when 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford drove his truck into the church, exited, and opened fire on congregants before setting the building ablaze. Officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Grand Blanc Township responded within minutes. Sanford was fatally shot by law enforcement after refusing to drop his weapon. The entire event lasted approximately 3 minutes and 43 seconds. Both officers involved are on paid administrative leave as per protocol. The police are currently still investigating the incident.
Mental Health Services for First Responders After the Mormon Church Tragedy
The Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) is encouraging first responders affected by the Grand Blanc Mormon church tragedy to access free, confidential mental health support through the Frontline Strong Together (FST5) program. In an interview with Mid-Michigan NOW, POAM President Jim Tignanelli emphasized the growing need for mental health care in public safety, noting that ongoing stress can deeply impact both mental and physical well-being. POAM remains a dedicated partner in developing and expanding FST5, ensuring it stays peer-led, trauma-informed, and accessible statewide. The organization urges all first responders to seek support when needed, reinforcing that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
