2025 Michigan Law Enforcement Candlelight Memorial Service
Sponsored & hosted by MI-C.O.P.S. and Police Week Michigan, Back the Badge Michigan & Friends invite you to the 31st Annual Michigan Law Enforcement Candlelight Memorial Service.
This service honors fallen law enforcement officers and their families.
Memorial Service Information
- When: Monday, May 5, 2025
- Time: 6:30 p.m., with the 45-minute ceremony beginning at 7 p.m.
- Where: Michigan State Capitol, 100 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing, MI, 48933
- Why: To honor those who have fallen and support their surviving families.
- Who: All are welcome! Additionally, MI-C.O.P.S. is looking for uniform personnel to form a codon for the families of the fallen to walk through and then become the backdrop on the steps of the Capitol.
- This year, the following officers are being honored for their life and dedicated service of:
- Trooper Joel E. Popp, Michigan State Police, EOW 01/24/2024
- Motor Carrier Officer Daniel M. Kerstetter, Michigan State Police, EOW 09/15/2024
- Deputy William H. Butler Jr., Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office, EOW 06/27/2024
- Detective Bradley J. Reckling, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, EOW 06/22/2024
- Corporal Mohamed Said, Melvindale Police Department, EOW 07/21/2024
- Patrolman Herman C. Schmidt, Hamtramck Police Department, EOW 02/18/1917
- Officer Benjamin C. Montie, Ecorse Police Department, EOW 03/31/1924
- Officer John O. Hessler, Ecorse Police Department, EOW 08/12/1943
- Deputy Arvin E. Kays, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, IN, EOW 05/26/1990
