Garden City Officers Honored for Heroic Fire Rescue
Garden City Police Officers Jonathan Marcyan and Gregory Goodbred responded to a life-threatening house fire at a local duplex residence on October 6, 2024. They found the upstairs porch fully engulfed in flames and were informed that one of the occupants was still inside the residence and had no way out.

As the main exit was blocked by fire, the officers immediately gathered information from another resident and identified a possible secondary exit through an adjacent room. The officers immediately broke down the apartment door, located the trapped woman, and guided her to safety, just seconds before the fire condition worsened.
The Garden City Fire Department later remarked that the incident could have been catastrophic without the officers’ swift action.
Officers Marcyan and Goodbred have been awarded the 2025 Police Officer of the Year Award by the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) for their bravery, fast action, and unwavering commitment to saving lives. They are the best of the best of Michigan law enforcement.
