After dispatch reported a man on the property trying to enter the building with a firearm, officers Grembowski, Zavitz, Caprathe, and Williams responded to the scene alongside Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies.

Officer Grembowski arrived to find the suspect sitting alone at a picnic table near the plant’s south entrance. Sensing potential danger, he repositioned his patrol vehicle to provide cover, retrieved his department-issued shotgun, and took a defensive position

As officers issued commands for the suspect to show his hands, he stood up and displayed the firearm. Ignoring repeated orders to drop the weapon, the suspect began walking toward the officers, waving the revolver erratically before pointing it directly at Officer Grembowski.

Despite multiple warnings, the suspect refused to lower his weapon and responded to officers’ commands with a defiant “No.” When he leveled the firearm directly at Officer Grembowski, the officer—fearing for the safety of his team—fired one round to stop the immediate threat.

Officer Jared Grembowski’s actions reflect the training, bravery, and dedication required of law enforcement officers. His ability to remain focused under extreme pressure and take decisive action protected not only his fellow officers but also the wider community.

We proudly recognize Officer Grembowski as a POAM Police Officer of the Year. His service is a powerful reminder of the courage it takes to stand on the front lines and the impact of leadership in a moment of crisis.
