Teen Caught in Dangerous AuSable River Current
During the 2025 Annual Convention, the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) proudly recognized Oscoda County Deputy Ryan Blair for his extraordinary bravery and life-saving actions during a water rescue near the Mio Dam.
On August 1, 2024, Deputy Blair responded to a call of a 17-year-old male struggling to stay afloat in the AuSable River. Upon arrival, Deputy Blair assessed the scene and immediately understood the gravity of the situation. The teen slipped below the surface, caught in the dam’s powerful current and whirlpool-like conditions.
Deputy Blair Enters River to Save Drowning Teen
Deputy Blair immediately removed his duty gear and entered the dangerous water. Battling strong currents, he reached the semi-unconscious teen and secured him with a rescue disc. The current repeatedly pulled them under, but Blair’s determination never faltered.
As the rescue intensified, three Good Samaritans—off-duty Tri-Town firefighters Cameron Thurston, Corey Newton, and Mio resident Cody Wilson—entered the river to assist. They formed a human chain and helped Deputy Blair protect the victim. Both Deputy Blair and the teen were transported to nearby hospitals for evaluation. Thanks to their combined efforts, the teen survived.
Deputy Blair’s courage, quick thinking, and commitment to protecting life exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement. His selfless actions, alongside those of the citizens who supported him, were a powerful reminder of the strength of community partnerships and the daily risks officers take.
POAM extends its sincerest gratitude and congratulations to Deputy Blair for his heroism and dedication to duty.
