Officer Brian Zinser Honored for House Fire Response
On a night dedicated to honoring courage, service, and sacrifice, Officer Brian Zinser of the Canton Police Department was recognized as a Police Officer of the Year by the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) for his extraordinary actions during a residential fire that occurred on November 24, 2024.
Officer Enters Burning Home Without Gear
That evening, the Canton Dispatch received a call about a house fire. Flames and smoke were already consuming the home when Officer Zinser arrived. Without protective fire gear or breathing apparatus, Officer Zinser entered the burning structure to search for anyone who might still be trapped inside.
Inside the smoke-filled home, Officer Zinser discovered a small child hiding in a cabinet just a few feet from the front door. He immediately alerted the child’s father, who had also re-entered the residence with a garden hose in hand, and together they safely removed the child from the home.
Tragically, of the three children who lived in the residence, the child Officer Zinser located and helped rescue was the only survivor.
Honoring Officer Zinser’s Bravery and Impact
His quick thinking, selfless bravery, and unwavering commitment to the safety of others in a life-threatening situation are a powerful example of what it means to serve and protect.
The Police Officer of the Year Award recognizes officers who demonstrate exceptional valor, leadership, and dedication to duty. Officer Zinser’s actions on November 24th saved a life and reminded us of the critical role officers play in responding to emergencies of every kind.
