Deputies Glaspie, Powers, and Williams Awarded at POAM Convention
During the Business Meeting highlighting the 2025 Police Officer of the Year Awards at POAM’s Annual Convention, Deputy Cole Glaspie of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office received POAM’s highest individual honor: Police Officer of the Year. Deputies Homar Williams and Leo Powers II also received Distinguished Service Awards for their essential roles during the same incident.
Armed Fugitive Confrontation at Belle Isle State Park
On April 29, 2024, Deputies Glaspie, Williams, and Powers—members of the Wayne County Deputy Sheriff’s Association—responded to a GPS tether alert for a fugitive who had failed to appear in court for a felony criminal sexual conduct trial. The suspect, a former military member considered armed and dangerous, was located deep in a wooded, swampy area of Belle Isle State Park.
While navigating the dense terrain, Deputy Glaspie contacted the suspect seated near the Detroit River. Without warning, the suspect raised a 9mm rifle and fired at Deputy Glaspie. Glaspie returned fire, striking the suspect, who then fell into the river.
Courageous Rescue and Lifesaving Efforts
In a split-second decision that showed immense courage and restraint, Deputies Glaspie and Williams entered the cold, fast-moving water to rescue the wounded suspect. Deputy Powers secured the weapon and supported lifesaving efforts on shore. The team applied a tourniquet, controlled bleeding, and kept the suspect stable until EMS arrived.
Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Operations Scott Gatti commended the deputies’ coordinated actions, highlighting their bravery, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to preserving life, even when facing deadly force.
Deputy Glaspie’s ability to remain composed under fire and act with compassion exemplifies the best of Michigan law enforcement. POAM proudly recognizes all three deputies’ exceptional service and dedication to protecting their community.
