The morning of April 4, 2023, began a new shift for the Deputies of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Teather Unit. At 8:45 a.m., Deputies Curtis Aycox, Robert Smith, & LaQuawn Milhouse, along with Corporal John Pietz, would face a situation that would test the limits as law enforcement officers.
Wayne County Deputy Sheriff’s Association Receives Award
A suicidal domestic violence and felonious assault suspect, placed on a pre-trial GPS tether by the court, was in the process of attempting to remove his tether unit. The deputies were dispatched and responded to a Ferndale residence to locate the suspect.
Two deputies were let into the residence by the homeowner and informed the suspect was in a rear bedroom and nonviolent. Two other officers were outside awaiting the arrival of their supervising Sergeant.
Upon arrival of the Sergeant, the suspect was observed through the bedroom window armed with a butcher knife. The officers negotiated unsuccessfully with the suspect for thirty minutes. Ultimately, another option would have to be pursued.
With Their Tactical Training
Displaying tactical acumen, Deputies Aycox and Smith forced entry into the bedroom, and the suspect wielded not one but two butcher knives and began moving toward the deputies.
To neutralize the threat non-lethally, Deputy Aycox deployed his taser. However, the taser was ineffective, and the suspect lunged forward, stabbing Deputy Aycox. In the face of imminent danger, Deputy Smith made a split-second decision to use his firearm, effectively ending the attack but beginning a tumultuous struggle to secure the suspect.
Despite being shot, the suspect continued to fight the deputies. Corporal Pietz was also injured in the fight. Deputy Milhouse’s heroism shone brightly amidst the violence and chaos. He assisted in subduing the suspect and provided critical aid to his injured comrades and suspect until additional assistance arrived.
Faithful Commitment to Protecting Their Community
We are honored to present the 2024 Police Officer of the Year Award to Deputy Aycox, Deputy Smith, Deputy Milhouse, and Corporal Pietz, who exemplified teamwork, bravery, commitment, and professionalism in a dangerous and violent situation under the most challenging circumstances.
