On May 9, 2023, at 11:53 p.m., while on uniform patrol, they were alerted to be on the lookout for a red Honda Civic, identified by its Indiana plates, driving erratically and swerving dangerously on Gratiot Avenue in Clinton Township. Upon locating and attempting to stop the red Honda, a pursuit resulted, which would test the limits of the officers’ training and commitment to public safety.

Officers Alexiou and Rowan pursued the vehicle and were joined by Officer Scott Solo, who became the lead patrol vehicle. The officers maintained their pursuit as the Honda Civic, to escape, drove without lights, veered off the road, and sped through residential areas with a reckless disregard for public safety.

The suspect was determined to escape, and the officers were determined to prevent their escape. What dispatch and the officers did not know was the vehicle and suspects had just committed an armed robbery.

Safely Ending the Pursuit

The chase escalated, with parts falling off the now Honda as it veered across lanes and repeatedly smashed into curbs. Finally, the chase ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into a light pole and catching fire.

In the face of imminent danger, our officers’ instinct was to protect the suspects in the Honda. Officers Alexiou, Rowan, and Solo rushed towards the inferno without hesitation. They worked tirelessly to extract the suspects from the wreckage and remove them from immediate danger.

Officers Solo and Rowan attempted to open the passenger-side door but were blocked by the light pole lying by the overturned vehicle. Officer Alexiou joined the rescue and helped move the pole to open the car door. Having partially opened the vehicle door, both suspects were pulled from the wreckage and placed at a safe distance.

Under extreme conditions, the actions and dedication of these officers were heroic and saved the lives of those involved. This incident is a testament to the resolve and humanity that define the profession of law enforcement. Officers faced a scenario where every second counted, making decisions that underscored their commitment to life while placing their own in jeopardy.
