May is one of our favorite months of the year here at the Police Officers of Michigan. Not only do we get to travel to Washington DC for National Police Week, but it’s also when we host our Annual Convention in Grand Rapids. This year’s convention was a great success. The Seminar and Business Meeting kept all our members abreast of the latest news, information and legislative updates pertaining to POAM members while our awards ceremony honored those who have gone above and beyond. Thank you all our members for their support through another year with POAM!

POAM Legislative Director Kenneth Grabowski kept POAM members up-to-date on legislation that could affect them while Trademark Productions President Dwight Zahringer instructed them how to appropriately use social media as a part of the law enforcement community. Other topics discussed were how health care reform will affect police officers as well as information about the importance of understanding grievance filing and collective bargaining processes at the local level.

Business Meeting & Awards Presentation

Thursday, May 23

2013 POAM SeminarOne of the highlights of our annual convention is the business meeting and awards presentation. Every year, POAM makes an effort to honor Michigan law enforcement officers who have gone above and beyond while on duty. These honors are the Police Officer of the Year, Distinguished Service, POAM Loyalty awards, among others. One of the officers recognized was West Bloomfield Police Officer Patrick O’Rourke who died in the line of duty while responding to a call last fall. We hope you take the time to review the presentations of these great awards.
