The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is a full-service, 24-hour public safety department that works to meet the needs of the Michigan Medicine community. Currently, there is an open position for a Michigan Museum Security Officer. Their officers are highly trained security professionals equipped to serve all members of their community. We manage all security operations for the Museum of Art, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, and the Museum of Natural History and may also provide security services for other university buildings and events. We offer an integrated customer service approach to safety and security while protecting the assets of the museums. We provide a safe community while improving the quality of life for all those living, learning, working, and visiting their community. As a Museum Security Officer, you will report to the Director of Museum Security.
Work schedules may include nights, weekends, afternoons, holidays, and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position following the DPSS uniformed dress code. There will be stationary and foot patrol responsibilities, with building-specific responsibilities.

Responsibilities
- Ensure public safety, protect assets, and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire and security agencies;
- Act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment.
- Detect safety hazards and criminal activity.
- Patrol museums and grounds to identify safety hazards and criminal activity
- Conduct investigations and prepare reports.
- Provide security and customer service for Museum events and traffic and crowd control for special events.
- Respectfully communicate and work with all staff and community members.
- Enforce University regulations and security procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters.
Required Qualifications
- High School or GED equivalent and one (1) ear of experience in a security, fire, military, customer service, or emergency management field
- Experience with the enforcement of fire, safety, and security practices
- Can assist emergency response personnel with maneuvering persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious and can restrain someone.
- Skillset in handling emergency situations and using associated equipment
- You can perform life-saving techniques such as CPR and First Aid.
- A valid driver’s license and a driving record with less than 6 points.
- You must pass a background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.
Pay and Union Affiliation Information
The pay range for new Michigan Museum Security Officers is $43,409.60 to $44,277.79. The full salary range for Security Officers who have completed a one-year probationary period is $46,238.40 – $53,747.20.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters concerning wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment. Additionally, this salary information is available in the POAM bargaining agreement.
All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
