This Department is a full-service department with many services and units. These include a uniform patrol, detective section, Metro SWAT, hostage negotiation team, underwater search and rescue, polygraph, computer forensics, traffic services unit, K9, motorcycle and bicycle patrols, and a community engagement unit. Job Description
This sworn law enforcement position involves protecting life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work involves responsibility for performing assigned police work of varying difficulty utilizing community-oriented/problem-solving techniques, which include community engagement, resource development, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, crime prevention, detection and investigation, apprehension of violators, preservation of order, and related police functions. Frequently involves performing hazardous and strenuous tasks and exercising initiative and judgment in various situations endangering life or property.
The position also involves 12-hour shift work and the potential to work weekends and holidays.

Salary
The starting salaries for the entry-level and lateral Police Officer positions are as follows:
Entry Level Police Officer
w/Associate’s: $60,000 annually ($28.84 hourly)
w/Bachelor’s: $61,350 annually ($29.49 hourly)
Lateral Police Officer (2 years of experience)
w/Associate’s: $67,000 annually ($32.21 hourly)
w/Bachelor’s: $68,507.50 annually ($32.93 hourly)
Lateral Police Officer (3+ years of experience)
w/Associate’s: $70,500 annually ($33.89 hourly)
w/Bachelor’s: $72,086.25 annually ($34.65 hourly)
*Pay based on current contract
**Lateral candidates have two or more years of full-time sworn law enforcement experience.
Full wage tables are at the end of the current AAPOA contract.
There is an earning potential under the current contract:
- After 10 years of service with the AAPD, the salary of a Police Officer is:
- w/Associate’s: $95,950 annually
- w/Bachelor’s: $98,108.88 annually (base pay)
- After 10 years of service, the salary for a Detective is:
- w/Associate’s: $105,545 annually
- w/Bachelor’s: $107,919.76 annually (base pay)
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
- An Associate’s Degree or equivalent college credits (60) is required at the time of hire.
- Must be MCOLES certifiable or have completed the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training for out-of-state candidates at the time of hire (for entry-level and lateral candidates).

- Positions in this class typically require driving, reaching, standing, walking, climbing, running, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, jumping, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
- Crawling, wrestling, handcuffing, and self-defense techniques may be required. Extreme physical and mental exertion may be required depending on the circumstances and call for service.
- The ability to possess normal color vision without the assistance of color-enhancing lenses, possess 20/20 corrected vision in each eye, and possess normal visual functions in each eye as defined by the MCOLES Licensing Standards. Move and lift light objects of various weights depending on circumstances and calls for service. Most items are less than 50 pounds and include but are not limited to down trees/branches, barricades, moving files, a podium and manhole covers. They may be required to also push cars out of the roadway, wrest with people, people that need to be moved to another location (medical calls, injured officer), assist medical examiner with moving dead bodies, move dead animals including deer, etc.
