This job is demanding and often requires officers to face challenging situations head-on. This afternoon, we commend Albion Command Officers Association’s Lieutenant Aaron Phipps and Calhoun County Deputy Sheriff’s Association’s Deputy David Winder for extraordinary courage and swift decision-making.
Lieutenant Aaron Phipps and Deputy David Winder’s Story
In June 2023, a young child reported a critical situation; their mother was endangering the life of her two-year-old daughter. Through the 911 call, the child described their mother was attempting to drown her daughter and stabbed her in the chest.
Upon arriving at the scene, Lieutenant Phipps and Deputy Winder were met by distressed children, who directed them to the residence. Acting decisively, Deputy Winder forced his way into the home and bathroom, where he wrestled the mother, who had a knife, away from the child. This action allowed Lieutenant Phipps to pull the child from the bathtub. Together, they secured the child from harm, performing crucial first aid to save her life. The mother was apprehended and taken into custody.
Honoring Their Brave Acts
That day, Lieutenant Phipps and Deputy Winder’s actions demonstrated the core values we strive to uphold: courage, determination, and the will to act swiftly in critical moments. Their efforts ensured the safety of a young child, and their actions remind us of the impact our work can have, the responsibilities we bear, and the difference we can make in our communities.
Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Phipps and Deputy Winder on their commendable service and the 2024 Police Officer of the Year Award.
