Two positions are ready to be filled as EMU police officers. The successful candidate must be MCOLES certified, participate in the Washtenaw Safety Alliance, and be able to effectively engage and positively interact with our diverse population of students, faculty, and staff on campus. In addition, they are sworn through the City of Ypsilanti and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, which extends the boundaries of our powers of arrest. EMU offers a competitive salary package with a salary step increase for applicants with prior police experience.
Responsibilities of EMU Police Officers
- Act as the first-line representative of law enforcement/public safety to the EMU community.
- Carry out the duties and responsibilities to enforce local, county, and state ensuring equal application of constitutional rights are upheld.
- Act as an ambassador of the law enforcement professional with fair and impartial enforcement strategies.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid Driver’s license.
- Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Training Certification, or certifiable status.
- Prior experience as a campus or police officer experience is preferred.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations that may not be familiar./li>
- Ability to work under pressure, occasionally for long periods of time.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Ability to work with appropriate safety-related gear including a bulletproof vest, firearms, handcuffs, etc.
- Ability to physically and mentally perform the essential duties of the job.
- Ability to effect, arrest, subdue, and search suspects and prisoners.
- Ability to drive department vehicles.
- Basic knowledge of computers is preferred.
- An Associate degree is preferred.
- Ability to work 12 Hours Shifts (0700-1900 Days) (1900-0700 Nights).

More About Eastern Michigan University
Eastern Michigan University PD consists of a Chief, 3 Lieutenants, 7 Sergeants, and officers. Opportunities exist as first responders, community engagement, investigative section, and leadership advancement. Currently, the department is authorized with 35 sworn members. Each operations shift is staffed with 5 officers. The department is open 24/7 with a communication section that operates as a PSAP. Emergency Management and Environmental Health and Safety also fall under the scope of EMU PD.
EMU police officers are Sworn under Public Act 120 of 1990 and are MCOLES-certified police officers vested with the responsibility of providing a safe learning environment by protecting life and property through fair and equitable enforcement of laws, ordinances, and policies. Officers receive ongoing annual development in areas such as the use of force, active shooter, fair and impartial policing, cultural awareness, and AED/CPR medical first responder certification.
All members of the EMU Department of Public Safety (DPS) are considered campus security authorities (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter
