The Charter Township of Canton is looking for a dedicated Public Safety Officer to serve as a 911 operator. In this role, you’ll handle emergency and non-emergency calls while also assisting police officers with restraining individuals in custody and processing arrestees.

About the 911 operator position

The Public Safety Service Officer is responsible for various critical functions within municipal public safety operations, including receiving, transmitting, and logging messages via a radio communications system. The role supports police officers and fire personnel as needed while also performing tasks related to department operations. Working under the general supervision of the on-duty shift commander in the Patrol Division, the officer exercises independent judgment when dispatching personnel in response to service calls and emergencies. Additional responsibilities include answering 911 and non-emergency calls, assisting with the physical management and restraint of individuals in custody, processing arrestees, and handling duties such as jail attendant tasks, operating LEIN machines, maintaining records, and supporting front desk, animal control, and traffic control operations. The Public Safety Service Officer position is a non-sworn, non-certifiable Public Safety position.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Physical stamina and the ability to handle physically demanding situations.

  • Strong comprehension and communication skills.

  • Ability to remain calm and to act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Ability to quickly learn and perform the job duties, and pertinent rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • This includes operating multiple computer systems while having a conversation or taking notes while listening to the radio.
  • Be willing to work a variety of shifts and on a seven-day-per-week schedule.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well with others and interact with the public courteously.

  • Must have a background that is free of liability concerns, such as convictions of careless or reckless driving, suspended license, felony or criminal convictions, or any convictions involving drinking or impaired driving within the past 5 years.

Based on the qualifications of the candidates in the applicant pool, selection and hiring preference may be given to candidates that have:

  • Verifiable work experience in a municipal government Police and/or Fire Dispatch environment responding to both 911 emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • 911 Dispatch Academy Certification with related work experience.
  • Work experience in jail attendant duties, prisoner searches, and processing arrests.
  • Related Military Experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in law enforcement and/or criminal justice career as supported by prior work experience, education, and/or training in Criminal Justice-related courses, programs, or employment.
