Seminar Ideas Anyone?

Please post any suggested ideas or topics that you might have for the next POAM Semiar in June, 2009.  We have already heard that a detailed class on political involvement, endorsements, PAC Spending, etc. would be beneficial.  Any suggestions can be posted right here on the blog, feel free to leave a comment with your ideas.

Thanks,

Ed Jacques

  1. Pam Baunoch Says:

I would like to see some training on how to be a good union representative. For the newbee’s that have just taken on the role. Maybe about makeing bylaws and how important or un-important they may be. Maybe how to be better at negotiations.

  2. Henry Kjentvet Says:

Training for all local reps in the basics of collective bargaining and the laws governing same. Discussions on when to call your B.A.; when to file a grievance; and grievance resolution at the first step.

  3. Michele Hayden Says:

I have to agree with Pam Baunoch. Training in the basics would really assist the ‘rookies’ in feeling confident as a union rep and competent as a negotiator. Neither the bargaining table, nor a disciplinary hearing are good places for learning on the job.

  4. Paul Postal Says:

I agree with my fellow members. More education about negotiations and disciplinary hearings. For example, how ones negotiating team should behave during bargaining meetings with the employer. Always maintaining professionalism. Using the power of caucuses more to discuss our differences of opinions privately.

Training for Sheriffs Office bargaining units regarding the Sheriffs Constitutional Authority and how it can affect negotiations especially with a Sheriff that may abuse that authority.

This chat section is a great idea for us to talk. Perhaps a chat room that only registered POAM members can access with a password to talk more freely. What does everyone think?

  5. Matthew VanLiere Says:

I agree with the above three posts. Training and updates related to grievances, discipline, bargaining, etc is invaluable to both new and old Eboard members.

  6. Renee Campion Says:

A seminar on political involvement would be excellent. Our union got involved in politics and would have benefited from information on the subject. We learned the hard way what to do when you get involved on the political front, but we did benefit from it and would not hesitate to get involved again if need be. We would be willing to share our story at a seminar.

When we were forced to give up large benifits in health care the costs were very high. In recent years the costs have stablized and come down. At one point we discussed with our POAM business agent the possiblity of going back to the County at contract time and request that the money they have now saved because of the cost of health care coming down be passed back to the employees or at least split. The agent said that POAM was actually looking at this and had a plan for recooping some of the money we lost in benefits, this was a couple years ago. Has this every taken place and if so I would love to see some trainng on the subject.

  8. Paul Postal Says:

How about creating a chat room designed specifically for P.O.A.M members. Perhaps setting up our own passwords to access the chat room with P.O.A.M administrative approval. Then all members can get to know one another via chat room and discuss our ideas and possible solutions to our own departmental issues.

  9. Kasey Wright Says:

I am interested in training that focuses on discipline hearings and what and what are not acceptable practices in them for the union represenatives. I would like to be armed with some general knowledge at least before heading into one of those meetings and not having the slightest idea on how to handle the table.

  10. Jodi Moen Says:

I agree with the first three posting and the political posting from Renee. I would like to be trained properly on all these issues.

  11. Dan Kuhn Says:

We have recieved conformation from Blackwater Founder and CEO Erik Prince that he will be paticipating in the seminar on Weds. at the convention. It should one of the most memorable seminars POAM has ever hosted. We are working on having a Blackwater booth on vendor row at the Amway also, more details to come. Reserve your rooms early, this years convention will be one of our biggest/best ever.

  12. Michael Shelden Says:

I am also new to the Union and would to see extensive training on how to do my job as President. I am working blind at this time.

  13. Matthew VanLiere Says:
